Do I need experience to start BJJ?

No. Beginners are always welcome at ZR Team Northampton. You do not need to be fit, flexible, strong or experienced before you start training — our classes are structured to bring you up safely from your very first session.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first session, comfortable athletic clothing is fine — shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. If you train Gi, you will need a kimono, and for No-Gi a rash guard and grappling shorts. We can advise you on everything when you arrive.

How does the free trial work?

Choose what you'd like to book (trial, drop-in, membership or private), pick a programme and a class from the timetable, then choose a preferred date within the next 7 days and send your request. We'll reply to confirm your spot, or add you to the waitlist if the class is full.

Do you offer kids BJJ classes?

Yes. We run Kids BJJ for children aged 4–9 and 10–16. Classes build confidence, discipline, focus and resilience in a safe, structured environment, with a pathway into more advanced technical training and competition prep.

What membership options are available?

We offer an Introduction Plan (£45, 2 classes a week), a Champ Plan (£55, unlimited classes plus specialist sessions and event access) and a Kids Plan (£45, unlimited classes). You can also book drop-ins, a 2-week unlimited trial or private 1:1 sessions.

How do I book a class?

Use the in-app booking flow. Select your booking type, choose a programme and class, pick a date, fill in your details and accept the waiver. Classes are capped to maintain quality and safety, and you can request the waitlist if a class is full.

What is No-Gi and do you offer it?

No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is trained without the kimono, using a rash guard and grappling shorts. It includes holds and submissions usually banned in Gi competition. We offer both Gi and No-Gi classes throughout the week.

Yes. Our Female-Led BJJ programme is a No-Gi class for women and girls of all levels, integrating a comprehensive self-defence curriculum in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere — a positive place to start whatever your goal.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most practical martial arts for self-defence. It teaches you to control distance, escape bad positions, defend yourself on the ground and use leverage instead of relying on strength or size.
